Noted Scientist Professor Abdul Majid Siddiqui passed away





Noted Scientist and Former Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University, Professor Abdul Majid Siddiqui passed away for heavenly abode this morning at New Delhi. He was 79. He is survived by his wife Prof. Jamila Majid Siddiqui, two sons and a daughter. His son Dr. Shahid Jameel is an eminent scientist, New Delhi and Dr. Afashan Hashim is a business development, regulatory affairs and scientific consultant, USA. He will be buried at the University Graveyard today after the Asr prayer.

Born on January 1, 1933. He got his early education from Christian College, Lucknow and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from AMU in 1952 and 1954 respectively. Prof. Siddiqui obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1962 from School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, USA.

Prof. Majid Siddiqui held the positions of Consultant in Biochemistry, Khartoum, Sudan (1985-86), Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, AMU (1986-88), Head of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Basrah, Iraq (1977-81), Research Assistant, University of California, USA (1959-62).

Prof. Siddiqui was a brilliant student and was awarded Faculty of Science prize for securing highest marks in B.Sc. I year (1950), Gold Medal in 1952 for securing first position in B.Sc. (1952-53).



Recognition of his research work includes US Patent No. 3, 62, 94, 49 dated December 21, 1971 on ‘A Process of Combating hypercholesterolemia wherein 3-hydroxy-e-methylglutric acid’. He had also been the member of different academic and administrative bodies of the Aligarh Muslim University. He was the first provost of Mohammad Habib Hall.

Prof. Siddiqui was the son-in-law of Prof. Abdul Aleem, former, Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University.

AMU Engineering STUDENT WINS “SECOND PRIZE” IN SRI-LANKA





Syed Nabeel Mehdi, a student of B. Tech III Year Electrical Engineering department, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University has been selected the “Second Best” in the “Present Around the World” presentation competition South-Asia finals, organized by IET-UK in Sri-Lanka.

The competition was held on 21st August, at Hotel Galadari, one of the finest five star hotels in Sri Lanka. Competition was particularly close amongst Mr. Nabeel (from Delhi zone), Miss Ridhima (from Mumbai zone) & Mr. Saad Ali (from Lahore zone).

Mr. Mehdi gave presentation on the topic “Electricity crisis and role of renewable resources in future”. In his paper, he said that about 1.1 billion people in the world, out of which the majority lives in India are compelled to live in dark. Load shedding is very common in South-Asian countries and Sub-African countries. On the one hand Billions of dollars are being spent on searching life on other planets, while Billions of people live on our own planet in utter darkness. The problems like illiteracy, unemployment, backwardness, poor health, over population etc are rising in our part of the world due to electricity crisis. Mr. Mehdi observed that the need of the hour is to employ renewable green technologies for a better future and healthy environment.

He won a cash prize of £250. The first prize went to Mr. Saad Ali from Pakistan. It was a close competition, with selected participants from Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Lahore, Columbo and Dhaka.

Mr. Nabeel has previously won first prize in Delhi Finals held at Amity University, NOIDA.

AMU Faculty Critical Study of the British Novelist, Qaisra Shahraz





Professor Abdur Raheem Kidwai and Dr. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University have published an edited volume of seventeen critical studies on Qaisra Shahraz’s fiction titled “The Holy and the Unholy: Critical Essays on Qaisra Shahraz’s Fiction” published by Sarup and Sons, New Delhi.

Qaisra Shahraz, a British novelist, has been widely acclaimed as a major writer of contemporary world. Her novels “The Holy Woman” (2001) and “Typhoon” (2003) are considered as trend setting novels, which examine perceptively a wide range of complex issues such as gender, cross-cultural encounters, representation, recontextualization of Muslim society and modernity, cultural and marginality studies.
