Dr. A. K. Mittal emphasized upon the need to take a detailed history including history of similar illness in the maternal relatives of a patient with suspected haemophilia. He also gave some useful practical tips for managing acute bleeding episodes in such patients. Dr. Mittal observed that besides the medical and orthopaedic problems being faced by these patients, a number of social and psychological issues were also involved which need to be addressed with care. He laid emphasis on the establishment of a Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Centre involving Physicians, Pathologists, Surgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dental Surgeons, Psychologists and Counselors. A good laboratory set up was the back bone of any such centre. He also talked about the importance of carrier detection, ante-natal screening and counseling.

Dr. Mittal also distributed copies of ‘Guidelines for Management of Hemophilia by World Federation of Hemophilia’ to the Participants.

Dr. Mittal along with Dr. Naresh Gupta has played a key role in establishing a Hemophilia Day Care Centre in the Loknayak Hospital, Delhi where comprehensive care is being provided to patients.

Mittal and members of the teaching staff and residents of Departments of Pediatrics, Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medicine, and Physiology.

Dr. Zeeba Zaka-ur-Rab, Nodal Officer of Haemophilia Unit briefly highlighted the functioning and status of the Haemophilia Unit of JNMC. She expressed concern at the discontinuation of the grant for treatment of patients with Hemophilia by the State Government to Medical colleges run by Central Universities.

Prof. A. K. Verma, Dean, Faculty of Medicine appreciated the Department of Pediatrics for holding such an important lecture.

Prof. M. Ashraf Malik highlighted the functioning of the Hemophia Centre and the regular submission of reports regarding utilization of funds to the State Government. He hoped that the Central Government would approve the required grant for treatment of patients with Hemophilia as per the directives of the Hon’ble High Court.

Dr. Kamran Afzal, Dr. Uzma Firdaus from Dept. of Pediatrics , Prof. M. K. Sherwani and Dr. Mazhar Abbas from Dept. of Orthopedics, Prof. Tarique Mansoor and Dr. Atia Zaka-ur-Rab, Prof. Imam Bano, Dr. Nasreen Noor and Dr. Shaheen from Obstetric and Gynaecology were present in the lecture.
